Landscaping With Trees
By Mary Johnson
Many people plant trees without giving thought to the long-term commitment. Before planting trees, remember that most trees grow quickly and continue to grow for many years. Once your tree is established, it is not easy to move. There are many points to consider before making your investment. Research thoroughly and give serious thought to the variety of tree you wish to plant before making your final decision.

Know Your Limits
Choose a tree that will compliment your yard, rather than invade it. For example, the sycamore provides excellent shade, can grow a couple of feet a year, and has a long life. Keep in mind that sycamores are massive trees, and you need to carefully think about how such a huge tree will suit your yard and landscape. If you have a more compact outdoor space, choose one of many small to middle size varieties available.

Too Close to Home
Trees can be quite invasive, so remember to allow ample space between your tree and your home. Ask yourself what problems might arise should leaves fall or branches drop off. High winds can cause heavy limbs to fall and potentially damage your roof. Tall trees can interfere with power lines, and roots can affect other landscaping or even find their way into your foundation.

Get Plenty of Sun
Many types of trees need lots of sunlight to thrive. Some however, prefer the shade.
The dogwood is one example of a tree that does very well in partial to mostly shade.
Be sure you know the sunlight preference of the tree before you plant.

need to be rooted in well-drained soil. Be sure that the site you choose for planting has good soil with ample drainage. Another important and often overlooked point to consider is whether the full-grown tree will block a walkway or entrance. Leaves from fruit trees will fall, and may create a slippery situation on decks and sidewalks.

The Root of It
While at the garden center or nursery, choose a tree with a burlap-covered root ball that is equal to the roundness of the trunk and the size of the crown. Carefully check the tree trunk and be sure to choose one with no cuts in the bark. When ready to plant, dig the hole the same as the diameter of the tree trunk.

Know Your Borders
A row of trees can be an ideal way to border a property or home. Trees deliver not only lasting beauty, but they also provide a number of extra features. They create privacy for homes exposed to the world. A row of pine or maple trees will block unwanted intruders from peeking in. Trees also protect your home from elements like wind and sun, providing cool shade in summer, and protection from biting winds and blowing snow in winter.

Do your homework. Study your choices, choose your new addition wisely and maintain it properly. Your tree will grow, thrive and provide beauty and enjoyment for many years to come.
